NEW YORK – Ahead of the “High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution,” slated to take place today at the United Nations, the World Jewish Congress released the following statement:
“Rather than advancing peace, this conference risks entrenching division and undermining genuine progress. The announced intentions by some member states to recognize a Palestinian state at the conference amounts to a reward for the terror attacks of October 7th and decades of rejectionism toward Israel. These moves also undermine international pressure for the unconditional release of the 48 hostages still held by Hamas. Instead, the states should come together to designate Hamas as a terrorist organization and demand the disarmament of the group.
“Efforts to impose a solution from outside will not bring Israelis and Palestinians closer to peace. Rather, a durable resolution to the conflict can only come about through direct negotiations between the parties themselves, not one-sided conferences or symbolic gestures that excuse or embolden terror.
“It is even more troubling that this gathering is scheduled to take place on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, while separately a high-level Security Council session is scheduled to convene on the holiday itself—choices that come across as insensitive to Jewish communities and the State of Israel as they observe one of the holiest days of the year.
“The World Jewish Congress will continue to stand in solidarity with the State of Israel as it works to secure the release of all remaining hostages and to ensure that the horrors of October 7th are never repeated.”
