BUDAPEST - During the holiday of Sukkot, WJC Vice President and President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary (MAZSIHISZ), Dr. Andor Grósz met with the European Commission's Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner, and Minister for European Affairs and special envoy for combating antisemitism, János Bóka, to commemorate the second anniversary of the October 7 terror attacks.
The visit included a tribute to the honored the Hungarian victims of the Hamas terror attacks and the Holocaust at the Dohány Street synagogue. Magnus Brunner placed memorial stones and laid a wreath at a memorial tree in the synagogue's courtyard, saying "Let us not forget what happened that day - nor what and who we are up against."
The leaders then traveled to the Rumbach Synagogue, where they discussed the overall well-being of the Hungarian Jewish community, with Grósz providing an overview of Mazsihisz’s work. They exchanged ideas on combating antisemitism in Hungary, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a zero-tolerance policy and promoting education as a key measure. Brunner also underscored the EU’s commitment to ensuring top-tier security for Jewish communities across Europe, including specialized training sessions for law enforcement.
Earlier this year, Magnus Brunner met with World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder during the United Nations General Assembly high-level week to discuss the WJC's top priorities pertaining to core issues facing the global Jewish community.
